Dr. Bhatia joined University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2015 to establish the Institute for Cancer Outcomes and Survivorship. She is the Gay and Bew White Endowed Professor in Pediatric Oncology and serves as Vice Chair for Outcomes in the Department of Pediatrics. She also serves as the Associate Director for Outcomes Research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
She is currently serving on the editorial boards of multiple journals including the JCO, BBMT and CEBP. Dr. Bhatia completed her training in Blood Banking, Hematology/ Oncology and bone marrow transplant training from the University of Minnesota, where she also received her MPH in Epidemiology. She joined the Department of Pediatric Oncology at the City of Hope in 1996. In 2006, she established a new Department of Population Sciences at City of Hope and served as chair of the department until 2014. Dr. Bhatia is an internationally renowned leader in cancer survivorship and outcomes research, as well as disparities research, and author of over 270 publications. Dr. Bhatia continues to serve on several Study Sections for the National Cancer Institute (NCI). She serves on the scientific advisory board for several cancer centers. She was elected to membership to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and to the Association of American Physicians. She is the recipient of the Frank H Oski Lectureship Award from the American Society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology. She recently received the Outstanding Investigator Award from the NCI. Dr. Bhatia has served on the Pediatric Cancer Working Group for the NCI Cancer “Moonshot” initiative. She is passionate about mentoring her junior faculty and watching them grow.
